Gas leak forces use of temporary green



Golfers who played the course on December 20 were required to utilize a temporary green on the 18 hole due to a gas leak repair.

A small water leak was discovered next to the 18^th green on Wednesday December 18, 2013. On Thursday the crew began trying to locate the source of the leak. As the water leak was not directly connected to our irrigation system, the City of Fresno Water Division was contacted to help us locate the water pipe and repair the leak. During the excavation we came across a leaking gas valve buried about five feet below the surface of the green. Airways Golf Course was build over the top of an old Air Force Base during the fifties and much of the original infrastructure remains buried under the golf course. Once the gas leak was discovered PG&E was contacted to repair the gas valve, prior to the city repairing the water leak.



Pictured are the crews from PG&E and the City of Fresno who repaired the gas valve and water pipe next to the 18th green.

Repairs were completed by 1:30 in the afternoon and the green was reopened. You will notice an area just left of the 18^th green covered in sand and seeded, please play this area as ground under repair until further notice.

Aerification

I have received a number of questions regarding the upcoming aerification scheduled for next Monday.  We will be utilizing 5/8" coring tines and topdressing with sand to fill in the holes.  Work will be completed in one day and you should see smooth ball roll in a little over one week.  Thank you all for your understanding of this very necessary process!

Tree Planting Completed

The tree planting project has just been completed!!

106 trees have been installed on the golf course over the past few months.  Please keep in mind that for the first year or so I would appreciate if everyone would take a drop away from the trees and tree wells so that we can limit damage to the new trees.  If you have any questions regarding how or where to drop your golf ball, don't hesitate to ask the staff in the pro shop.

Tree Trimming Continues

Below is the crew from West Coast Arborists planting trees right of #6.  A total of 47 trees were planted throughout the front nine.  An additional 59 trees will be planted on the back 9 in the next month or so.

Below right is the crew working on the large eucalyptus tree right of number 10 fairway.

Wow! I can't believe it's been two months since the last post.....

As you have noticed we have been busy with our tree trimming and planting project over the past few months.  The front nine trimming is complete and we have begun to install the new trees, 47 total on the front 9, and will continue through next week.  We are on track to begin the back 9 soon.

I will get some pictures posted soon.
